‘’A preconception checkup is a medical checkup you get before pregnancy to help make sure you're healthy when you get pregnant. At your preconception checkup, your provider looks for health conditions that may affect your pregnancy and the health of your baby.’’ It is the checking of the body reproductive system and a genetic factor that can help to get rid of all the adverse factors for our future baby’s development.

Actually, it is also important to do premarital checkups for having a happy marriage and a healthy baby, but marriage just for the reproduction reason sounds a little wired, which means the romance or mystery of marriage will disappear completely. It is absolutely fine if we choose not to do it. But if you decide to do it, it is better to check 3-6 months before trying to conceive. It is better to do the checking at gynecology and obstetrics hospital. Now I'll explain to you how it works.

1. Reproductive system checking
It is to screen women’s leucorrhea to check if there is trichomonad, muscadine, mycoplasma, chlamydia infection. STDs like gonorrhea and syphilis can also be found this way.

2. ’’TORCH’’
T stands for toxoplasma gondii. O is defined as hepatitis B-virus, HIV, and treponema pallidum. R is means the Rubella virus. C is as known as cytomegalovirus. H is herpes simplex. If women are infected by these diseases, they would like to have miscarriage or babies with birth defects. And the examination just needs to test women’s blood.

3. Oral cavity checking
Medicine or medication for toothache will infect the development of a fetus. It is better to get the oral cavity problem done before trying to conceive.

4. Gynecological endocrine checking
This includes follicle-stimulating hormones and luteinizing hormones. Women who have irregular periods need to check if there are some problems with their ovaries.

5. Breasts checking
Only healthy breasts can breastfeed babies in the future. And it is better to breastfeed. But this is not quite important. As babies can be fed by bottle milk nowadays.

6. Uterus myoma checking
There are 4 types of myoma: Submucosa myoma, subserosal myoma, muscle intramural myoma, and cervical myoma. Subserosal myoma has less impact on conceiving. But submucosa myoma can cause longer periods and more blood, which leads to miscarriage and infertility. Big muscle intramural myoma can make the uterine cavity deformed,
which will affect fertilized ovum’s implantation and fetus development. Myoma can be treated with medicine or surgery. For women who have had such surgeries, they can only try to conceive one year later.

In general, a preconception checkup is essential. And don't be shy, no matter how awkward your questions may sound, your doctor will answer them professionally and refer you to other specialists or consultants if necessary.
